The leaves are changing and cooler weather is in the air. Tis the season for pumpkin patches, apple bobbing, tailgating at football games, and all the other wonderful things that come with autumn.
When the fall season rolls around every year, the change in weather makes us find ourselves anxious for a bit of change in our homes as well. Though fall fashion gets all the glory, fall interior design is also a glorious chance to embrace layering, textures, deeper color schemes, and the like.
Get Your Hygge On
In the summer, we naturally are drawn toward bright colors and minimalist looks that are appropriate for sunshine and busy days full of pool hopping. But when the cold weather sets in and we begin to spend more time indoors, it’s nice to add a bit of “cozy” to make home feel like a more inviting place.
The Danish famously call this inviting, cozy feeling “hygge,” meaning “the Danish art of coziness,” and we’re drawing upon the concept with these 8 cozy living room ideas to get you ready for fall.
1. Add layers.
If you’re wondering how to make a living room cozy on a budget, try adding layers to the room. While you may already have a few pillows on the couch, fall is the time to really take things to the next level. Add even more pillows to pump up the cozy look of the room. Look for pillows in all different sizes and textures to add interest. Next, add a couple throw blankets to the back of the couch or an armchair, so you have the perfect spot to cuddle up on chilly nights. You may also consider adding a rug, Sherpa throw, or cowhide to the floor. Even if you have wall-to-wall carpet, a rug will break up the space to add interest. (And feel cozy under feet!)
2. Change up the lighting.
Lighting plays a huge role in creating a cozy living room. Pay attention to how your home is lit and make sure you have diversity when it comes to lighting sources. The most inviting homes have at least five different light sources in one room alone. While that may sound like a lot, it means you’ll always have the perfect lighting situation, whether you’re reading a book on the couch, watching tv, or entertaining a crowd. Here are five light sources to consider adding to your room:
- Floor lamp
- Side table lamp
- Overhead light
- Track lighting
3. Darken the color scheme.
Though you certainly don’t have to do a whole remodel, any room can benefit from some tweaking of the color scheme. While spring and summer may have left you wanting bright and airy decor, fall is the time to deepen the color scheme and go a bit moodier. Look for dark greens, deep blues, warm reds, and golden tones when you add new throw pillows, blankets, rugs, or wall decor to the room.
4. Embrace texture.
Like the layering technique we already mentioned, texture is a great way to create depth and subtly make a room more inviting. Think about adding different materials to your living room to make things more interesting. Any of these items would make for textural and cozy living room decor:
- Wood accent walls
- Fur blankets or pillows
- Antlers or taxidermy
- A sliding barn door
- Decorative stones or crystals
- Plants, both living and artificial
- Wood beams
5. Freshen up the fireplace.
Since the weather is turning cooler, you’ll want to put more emphasis on the fireplace as the focal point of the room. Stock the fireplace with wood logs to add texture and make it easy to start a fire any time of day. Revamp the mantle by adding decor pieces of varying heights.
6. Make sure you can seat a crowd.
While you may be leaving a season of hosting backyard barbecues and pool parties, fall is the time to entertain indoors. Hence, make sure you have adequate seating for large parties or football viewing on Sunday nights. You may want to add an armchair or bench if seating is sparse. Or you can really change things up by investing in an ultra-cozy sectional to seat a crowd.
7. Revamp your wall decor.
Changing up your wall decor is an easy way to totally switch up the vibe in your room. Replace photos on the wall for an inexpensive option. Bright photos of the beach can be taken out and moody black and white portraits can take their place.
8. Prepare to entertain.
When parks and pools are no longer an option for gathering with friends or family, you’ll want to make sure your home is ready for groups who may want to sit close to a warm fire. Make your living room a place that’s great for fall entertaining by adding a few items that will spark conversation or give you something to do with friends. Here are a few ideas:
- Refresh your coffee table with interesting books
- Set out unique puzzles or brain games
- Restock your bar cart
- Set out coasters and bowls of chocolate or nuts
